SONRISA is a collective effort of a group of enthusiastic youths who are willing to commit themselves to social welfare.With the encouragement from foreign friends (Miss Luisa Gonzalez Spain, Mr. Ivan from France, Mr. Yohan Pour UK and Miss Anna Chabin Switzerland),we pursue the vision to work proactively for the betterment of lives of orphaned, semi-orphaned and abandoned children who are deprived of virtually everything; fundamental needs, education and supports.To start with, we had nothing but the energy and enthusiasm. We took initiation under the leadership of Mr. Bishnu Rai.The SON became operational in a rented flat at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu keeping in mind an easy access to school, hospital and transportation.

During the initial phase, the support from Miss Luisa, Mr. Ivan, Mr. Yohan and Miss Anna were instrumental to develop internal infrastructure of SON and raising fund to operate the organization. In this project, Mr. Gyan Bahadur Lama, Secretary, DCWC provided us with invaluable suggestions and guidance regarding the official formalities and co-ordination with other organization.The Children at the SON belong to different regions of Nepal and have been brought to us by various governmental bodies. Most of the children became orphans due to untimely demise of their parents while some are victims of domestic violence.

Mr. Bishnu Rai [ Director of SONRISA ] visited different countries of Europe spreading words about the orphanage and the orphans in Nepal to expand partnership with donor individuals and organizations. During his visit, SONRISA earned a very warm and aspiring response from international community.By this time, we have accomplished a successful year and have made gradual and steady progress in operating the organization and nursing children.

Keeping the regional and International Child Rights Acts on mind  SONRISA is dedicated to work proactively for the betterment of lives of needy children.We strongly believe  that every child deserves the right for education, medical care,love and support irrespective of their socio-economic status.

To provide facilities for the overall development of children (physical, mental, emotional and social) we provide them education,medical care,homely environment with extra-curriculum activities and recreational programs. Computer and other vocational training with psychological support is given wholeheartedly. Music classes that includes,Vocal training,dancing,training on flutes,tabla,violin,drums have been like a dose of medicine for these children and they enjoy it tremendously.

We also work closely in coordination with the local governmental bodies nationally and internationally for the welfare of these children.

Background

A set of unavoidable circumstances - natural disaster, the country's frail economy, even the decade long Maoist-led war- have,unfortunately, forced thousands of children to adopt the life of orphans and thereby becoming quite vulnerable to drug trafficking,exploitation and other criminal activities. They are deprived of their fundamental child rights such as having basic education.Sonrisa Orphanage Nepal  a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the needy and destitute children- aims to uplift these particular children, offering them the education and parental care.

CONCLUSION

We believe that a small contribution can lead to a great change in the long run. So we, with collective efforts from all sides can bring about changes in wider community within our society and we look forward to making things different in the very same way.
